Intrathecal Transarterial Injections
In the case of compression and pain generated in the area of a single nerve root's innervation, the injection is administered into the intervertebral foramen corresponding to the specific nerve. The goal is for the anti-inflammatory medication to surround the herniated disc, reduce its size, and shrink the affected nerve root exiting the spine. This helps alleviate pain and facilitates rehabilitation.
Intrathecal “caudal”/ intralaminar injections
In the case of a larger area of the spine affected by inflammatory changes, multilevel changes, or conditions such as spinal stenosis where the pain is symmetrical and affects both limbs, the anti-inflammatory medication is administered centrally. This is done through the sacral hiatus or via a midline intervertebral approach, allowing the medication to spread more widely across the larger area, thus treating multiple pain generators simultaneously.
