Viscosuplementation
This treatment involve the administration of hyaluronic acid into the joints, resulting in an improvement of the quality of synovial fluid, specifically its viscosity and elasticity. Consequently, there is a reduction in joint friction, leading to diminished pain for patients and a significant enhancement in their quality of life.
Hyaluronic acid is physiologically present in the body’s tissues, including synovial fluid, but due to degenerative changes, the properties of the synovial fluid can deteriorate. The direct injection of hyaluronic acid, in the form of a solution or gel, into the joint space increases the viscosity and elasticity of the synovial fluid. Furthermore, hyaluronic acid serves a nourishing function for the articular cartilage and helps slow down its degeneration process.
Additionally, viscosupplementation may include the intra-articular or peritendinous administration of purified collagen, allowing it to integrate into the tissues and facilitating their regeneration.
