The procedure for determining disc reactivity, correctly referred to as disc stimulation, aims to assess whether an increase in pressure within the disc will provoke pain symptoms. If this occurs, treatment targeting the disc is initiated, and if ineffective, it qualifies the patient for surgical intervention.
Often, several discs are damaged in patients, but this does not necessarily mean that all of them cause pain. It is important to identify the specific disc responsible in order to minimize the extent of the surgical procedure and avoid unnecessary extensive spinal stabilization, which could later limit the patient’s quality of life.
